Chernobyl, Kyshtym, Three Mile Island and the March, 2011 nuclear disaster at Fukushima are staunch reminders of the potential for catastrophy when things go wrong at nuclear power plants. It matters not whether the cause was man made or mother nature simply re-shuffling the deck. Japan’s incident has scientists, engineers and regulators scrambling to design and implement more efficient and reliable prevention and containment systems, ostensibly to minimize the number of human deaths and long-term damage to the environment.
This situation has raised hundreds of questions regarding the safety of nuclear power plants. Some countries have vowed to curtail future nuclear projects while others like Germany have committed to fully decommission all of their nuclear power plants by 2022.
