Smart Phones Multiply By Leaps & Bounds
In the last 10 years the most popular way to get visits to your domain was to build strong link campaigns, build branding and also buy typos to get misspelled word traffic. But in the year 2012 all of what you know about search traffic is going to change because of one device, the smart phone. Between the smart phone, the app store and the laziness of human nature, traffic will now be captured in a whole new way moving forward.
Now some of you reading this are going to think I am out of my mind unless you are a teen, you have kids that are teens or are just really into the tech industry. But if you are the typical domainer that does not get out much because you prefer to tan your skin with your LCD that is fine, but think about what I am going to write next with some deep thought.
Let’s Start with some actual smart phone facts from Gartner Inc:
Worldwide sales of mobile devices totaled 440.5 million units in the third quarter of 2011, up 5.6 percent from the same period last year, according to Gartner, Inc.
What’s An “App”?
App is short for application. Smart phones do not use the same operating system as computers so in turn you need to code applications to run your software on the device without issues. You can basically code anything you want into the application so your website / game / or information can run on the humans smart phone. So when you hear “get that app” its basically a nice way of saying to someone, “Make your life easier with a software shortcut”
Now if you compare those stats to ten years ago, you can clearly see that the world of personal information is about to change. The old days of buying typo’s, building links and getting website traffic from the major search engines are close to being over. So let me tell you how you can have some faith and get ahead for the next round of Internet, which will ultimately be called web 4.0.
One Touch, No Characters. Its Just Eaiser
Here is something you have to ask yourself; “Why would I want to type in a domain name when I can just push a button?” That might sound like a common sense question right? So, do you have a mobile app for your domain and why not if you don’t?
You do know that is what most men and women between 13 – 30 years old are saying as they are using their mobile phones all day? Don’t you? I know myself personally, when I am using my iPhone, I would rather use an ‘app” then go to the smart phone browser and then have to type the URL into the menu bar. That is like making a phone call with a rotary phone in 2012 if you ask me.
“APP ply” yourself now:
Stop buying links, you should hire a web app developer or learn to code mobile apps yourself.
Stop worrying about the actual domain name; apps can drive way more traffic to your domain than traditional SEO.
Stop worrying about the new S.O.P.A law. If it passes, your “app” will be able to connect to your database server anyhow.
If you fail to get a mobile app for your domain you will fail in capturing major traffic that you are missing.
Push Mobile Users To Download Your App
If you run your domain with WordPress, you can a mobile version WordPress theme and then ask the users to download your web app with an on screen pop up or even with a footer task bar. The nice part about using WordPress with a mobile theme is only the mobile users on the smart phone will be able to see the download the app button which makes more sense.
In Conclusion:
Of course traditional search engine traffic will still give you some wanted visitors, but as time moves forward in the next few years you will see that application traffic will surely provide more traffic then all of the search engines combined.
